How is a standards-based grading different from a traditional report grading?

Standards-based grading differs from traditional grading in the sense that there are no averages calculated for an overall subject area. Instead, specific skills are evaluated within each subject to better inform parents, students and teachers about any areas requiring additional student growth toward achievement.

 

Why assess student progress through a standards-based grading?

A standards-based grading identifies how well a student is mastering each academic skill being taught and assessed in class. In a standards-based learning environment, teachers can specifically be able to identify student strengths and weaknesses, thereby permitting a more informed approach to individual student instruction.

 

What will a standards-based report card tell you about your child?

Standards-based grading is effective in informing parents about specific skill achievement as measured against state and grade level benchmarks. For example, instead of earning a “B” in reading, a student will be evaluated separately in skills such as predicting, inferring, and comparing/contrasting details.

 

Will student learning behaviors be assessed?

On a standards-based grading system, behaviors are not included in the assessment of a student’s academic skills. Instead there is a separate area to assess learning behaviors.

 

How does a teacher know when a student has met a standard?

Criteria for determining the level of performance are outlined by the teacher to students using developed scoring guides based upon district and state standards.
